Wolves

How interesting! Tonight the ranger talk at the Visitors Center was about wolves.  The ranger was abit dry, but he had a lot of info about wolves in Yellowstone.  There are about 100 wolves in the park itself, with more in the greater yellowstone ecosystem  They were reintroduced in 1995, '96 and '97, a total of about 40.  Since they are the apex predators, they have certainly affected all of the other facets of the park.  They got the elk population in control, which in turn had increased the type of growth of willows and aspen, which in turn increased the beaver population, which in turn changed the waterways.

Right now I'm sitting in the lounge with Rose, Steve and Brenda.  There are a few other people working on a picture album and a new woman just sitting and reading.  Rose is working on a crossword puzzle and getting help along the way.  We are trying to figure out who was arrested in 2019-7 letters.  We're also eating the lemon mug cake Mel sent me.  Instant cake made in a microwave.  We only had one spoon so it was really sharing.

Yesterday, Tuesday, Steve and I went to a seminar at the Rec Center on owls.  That one was really interesting, good informed speaker who has been working with owls for 30 years or so.  There are four kinds of owls,  Grey owl being the biggest in size, but not the heaviest, a long eared owl, which aren't exatctly ears, but more of a camouflage.  One guy is so small, only about 4 ounces, but feisty as heck.  She also has bird parts, wings and tails to show how soft the feathers are that make it silent flying.  Also, owls can turn their heads, 270 degrees, their eyeballs don't move, but each eye pupil can dilate individually.  Probably more than you really want to hear about wildlife in yellowstone.

This morning, I awoke before 6 AM and couldn't fall back to sleep so I decided to check out a sunrise in the geyser basin.  How beautiful.  There is very much steam and the early sunlight gave the area a dream-like feeling.  On one part of the boardwalk that is make with man-made boards that was in between trees had a layer of frost on it.  If I don't leave soon, it will be snowing.
